Palm TX Mic DIY :)

As all we know palm TX comes without microphone, but there is still chip responsible for this task. You can connect mic to ultra connector or build it inside cover. I decided to take second solution because I didn't wanted to have more things to carry in my bag, there is also problem to get ultra connector plug.
So in fact you need only microphone and wires, nothing else. I had something like on photo, but it was very uncomfortable so I never liked it, you can get something similiar very cheap or buy microphone separately.

Under this cover there is microphone.

As I said..

And here it is microphone only.

Now you have to open the cover of TX. There are very ugly and small star-like screws. I don't have right tool, but you can manage using other screwdrivers.
image
Screws are not enought to open the cover, there are also three safety clips. The cover is very solid, so even when you will lose screws you still have it closed very tight.
image
Using screwdriver it is very easy to open clips, some people are opening it with fingers, but this is not easy and it hurts ;) It is easy when you know where safety clips are. I will try to show this on next photos.
image
Remember about connector area. The cover is all around there so it's easy to brake something here. Few moves and it's opened.
image
Here it is place where we will connect wires. Mic signal is first from right (but not this one alone). Second it's ground, and next to them there are left and right speakers. Next two pins are hotsync irq.
image
Ok - here they are - safety clips. When you put your TX that you have screen on back and connector on bottom then this clip will be at right. It's as high as speaker.
image
Next two safety clips are located on left. First you can see under the cables. It's about place where grafiti starts, about 1/3 of TX height.
image
Second from left side is higher - about 2/3 of TX height. I hope you will have no problem opening cover.

I don't wanted microphone just inside cover like Dmitry. I decided to make a hole in cover and have it sticking out. It should be more sensitive. Second reason: I used bigger microphone than I have to, but this should be as always better quality of recorded sound. If you have smaller mic, you can make only small hole or just place it very near connector.

Last test of microphone.

I wanted small hole and I end with big one :/ That's because there is no so much place for big mic inside and you can't put it as you want. I placed it on some degree and it was rather hard to make precise hole, maybe much more better would be few small holes, like in most devices.
image
This was first attempt to connect microphone. As you can see I used first and second pin from connector. Don't do it like this ;) It's better and easier to connect it like on next photo.
image
Here I noticed that my microphone is already connectrd to ground, because of steel under it, so one wire can be cut out. Signal can be connected directly to board, what is rather easier than piercing in connector.
image
Ok, now it looks like this with cover. Ugly hole :/
image
Let's go back to my new-wireless headphone ;) There is still something that could be used from it.
image
Speaker or rather its cover could be useful...
image
Cut it to shape you want to have on cover.
image
Stick inside cover that large part is outside, it is flexible part so you can bend it. I found very easy way to gain good shape - bend it to other side very hard and plug again by second side.
image
It should look like this now. You can also glue it now to cover or use iron. It should stick very well. I was suprised how good it's holding here, but I will change this part in future to something black.
image
End effect.

Now you need some application to record sound. I tried few from palmgear, but most of them were designed for treo :/ At least I downloaded nice app from here . It is free, and works very well.

Good luck!
